All hail the Halibut!

Halibuts are a type of flatfish often to be seen on US and Canadian waters, although there have been sightings of such on Japanese waters as well; they are a family of the right-eyed flounder fish. They owe their name to the great popularity they have on catholic festivities; they are mostly regarded as food fish and have an incredibly low-fat meat. They range up to 500 lb (230kg), and can grow to the astounding measurement of 8 ft (2.4m).

Halibut Fishing in Haida Gwaii, Escott Lodge “Halis” have been fished throughout history mostly as a sport, in the way of a derby; this allowed competent authority to be aware of the amount of halibuts that had been fished, since people had to keep on record the quantity as well as the size and weight of each and every one of them in order to win. In a time slot of about 24 to 48 hours each, people from all over the world competed to see who could catch more amount and weight of Halis. This practice was abandoned with time due to the unsafe conditions people were fishing in, since issues as weather were not being taken in account when coordinating such events. This forced fishermen to leave dock in risky circumstances.

Fishing for Halibut is quite an amazing experience at Escott Sportfishing. The way to the perfect Hali fishing spot is only about 20 to 40 minutes away from our lodge, and many times it is possible to catch one of them while trolling for Salmon, so double the adventure! Since they remain most of their lives at the bottom of the sea, we take you to the deep waters to fish them; you’ll be surprised of the little time it takes to get one of these enormous fish! Safety comes first; we have top line equipment as well as proven techniques to make your fishing experience overall more enjoyable.

The diet Halibuts have make their meat extra low-fat and excellent to eat boiled, grilled or deep fried when still fresh; although it’s also a problem for some people since they are very hard to be smoked -unlike Salmon- because of the same reason. They are known as the “chicken of the sea” and have served as primary food source for natives in Alaska and Canadian First Nations throughout history. They make excellent food fish because of their sixe and protein source, plus, they don’t require heavy seasoning. Here at Escott Sportfishing we take very good care of our Halis. We offer you the whole experience by handling these amazing fish as soon as you touch shore, ensuring that whether you eat them at our lodge or take them home, they will be perfect to prepare and eat.

The biggest Hali to be reported in our waters weighed 173 pounds; this was quite an exciting experience for all of us. So the get ready and on your way to catch as many as you possibly can with Escott Sportfishing. All hail the Halis!

Welcome to the Tyee Club

The word Tyee originates from the beachfront Indian dialect and signifies "The Chief" or "Awesome Leader." The term is utilized to portray Chinook or Spring salmon that measure 30 lbs. then again more. Fishers who manage to catch a Tyee can become members of the Tyee Club of British Columbia.  Anyone who is eager to test their ability at sportfishing is welcome.

Biggest Salmon Ever Caught!

The world's biggest documented salmon ever was a 97 pound 4 ounce monstrous salmon caught in Alaska, in 1985 by Anderson.  There are also many undocumented huge salmon like a 99,1 pound salmon that was caught in Skeena River by a German tourist and many other 100 pound salmons in Elwha River.

Not a 99 pounder, but still a great catch!!

Mooching vs. trollling

Salmon fishermen have two essential angling procedures — trolling and float mooching. Here and there both will catch fish, yet different times one is without a doubt better.

Both float mooching and trolling are basic angling systems in which you utilize anchovy, herring, candlefish or whatever the predominant baitfish is at the time.
The profundity of the salmon is a standout amongst the most vital figures choosing what angling system to utilize. In the event that fish are amazingly profound, say 100 to 200 feet down, float mooching is the most ideal approach to get down to them. In areas where fish are holding in the main 50 feet or somewhere in the vicinity of water, trolling can achieve those profundities without breaking a sweat, and fishermen can cover an extensive variety of water speedier than moochers can do it.

On the off chance that fish are scattered, trolling covers a great deal of range and gets more salmon. Ahead of schedule in the season, when baitfish are rare, salmon eat krill and other little nourishments. They don't appear to take floating trap, however, will hit trolled goad. Anchovies, herring and sardines are ample by July, and salmon sustaining on these baitfish are helpless to float mooching.

Grady White's vs. Whalers and others

Boston Whaler's 255 Conquest holds a few points of interest over the opposition: amazing development, to a great degree smooth ride, great single-motor execution, and a cockpit that shouts "angle here." However, the pummeling, creaky brings forth, and pump-offer course of action with the livewell and wash-down are disappointments on a generally best retire angling machine. Boston Whaler additionally missed the mark in the lodge, with no encased head, or cookroom. Include the unquestionable requirements and watch the value climb.

Century's 2600 WA strikes us as a quick, enjoyable to-run, all-around well-constructed and all around prepared pontoon. We likewise give it high evaluations in the looks division, with shading coordinating fabrics and gel coat illustrations. Be that as it may, with the littlest cockpit and a tight walk around, this isn't the best pontoon for angling, particularly since it’s so lavish.

Cobia's 270 WA has pace, taking care of, solid yet light development, awesome evaluating, and the biggest cockpit. On the other side, the kitchen fridge is a waste (does regardless anybody utilize them?), and it was out and out agonizing to hear the fish box seal hammer.  Actually, it’s reasonable to ask whether this watercraft ought to try and be known as a walk around.

Professional Line's 26 Walk is a mind blowing deal. It has strong execution numbers, great ride, strong development, hot looks, and an awesome norms list. The lodge likewise comes preferable prepared over the standard, and the wide, profound walk around was one of the most straightforward to explore. Be that as it may, in the matter of angling, the shaped transom seat keeps you too a long way from the engines and eats cockpit space. Additionally, the livewell is modest, and the cockpit is the second littlest of the gathering.

Grady-White's Islander 270 is at the top, or near to it, in pretty much everything: ride, livewell outline, general fishability, walkaround security, washdown intensity, lodge and cockpit plan and furnishing, and a considerable rundown of value standard elements. Truth be told, this watercraft tied or took ahead of all comers in every class we considered aside from expense. Do its qualities exceed the sticker? Yes. It's no deal, yet at any rate you can see where your cash has been spent.

Just one of our Grady White fleet.
